What is a Fire-Rated Door? Do You Need Accreditation for That?

Fire-rated doors play a critical role in ensuring safety within the construction industry. At INCITO, we have extensive experience manufacturing fire-rated doors and glazed screens, ensuring that they meet the highest safety requirements.

What Are Fire-Rated Doors?

Fire-rated doors are specifically designed to resist fire for a certain period, typically ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. They are constructed using materials and techniques that prevent or delay the spread of fire, allowing more time for evacuation and for firefighters to control the situation. It's important to note that this passive fire protection also relies on the construction and partitioning of the room.

Do You Need Accreditation for Fire-Rated Doors?

Yes, separate accreditations are required for both production and installation of fire-rated doors to comply with safety standards. These certifications specify whether the doors are produced under BS476: Part 22 or under EN1634-1 standards. At INCITO, we hold all necessary accreditations to both manufacture and install these critical safety features, providing a comprehensive solution for our clients.

The production and installation processes are highly specialized and must strictly adhere to the guidelines set by accreditation bodies to ensure full compliance.

How Are Fire-Rated Doors Certified?

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how fire-rated doors are certified:

  1. Manufacturing: Once fire-rated doors and screens are produced, they are assigned a unique code.

  2. Pre-Installation Notification: Before installation, we notify the IFCC of all necessary details, such as product specifications and intended installation.

  3. Installation Certification: After installation, each door receives a unique installation code and label. The IFCC is notified again upon completion of the installation.

  4. Final Approval: A certificate of conformity is issued after inspection, which includes all relevant project details such as the manufacturing and installation codes. This certificate is then provided to the client and is crucial for Fire Department inspections, which must be passed before a building can be approved for use.

Design and Finish of Fire-Rated Doors

Fire-rated doors can be customized to match the design requirements of the project while still adhering to safety guidelines. The doors' appearance and finish may vary based on the project’s specific needs and design intent, but they always meet the limitations set by the accreditation body.

We have successfully supplied and installed fire-rated doors and screens for various projects, including:

With increasing safety regulations from the EU and other international authorities, certified fire-rated doors and screens have become essential components in modern construction projects.

We hope this post has provided you with a clearer understanding of fire-rated doors and screens, as well as how INCITO can assist with any related needs.
